Vibration Control & Measurement

Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota Client: Studio 5 Architects General Contractor: JE Dunn

This four-story, 160,000 square foot expansion to the University's Recreation and Wellness center opened for the students in 2013 with great success.

ESI provided vibration and noise control services to elevate occupant experience and functionality of the multi-purpose spaces within. The process started with careful selection of vibration criteria for each of the spaces.

Dynamics modeling was crucial in determining optimal structural member sizes and configuration for yoga and aerobics suites, a suspended running track, and other rhythmic activity areas. Impact noise from basketball courts and free weights was mitigated with carefully selected flooring systems.

Creation of a true multi-purpose facility requires careful consideration,
especially when high impact activities are located adjacent to sensitive occupancies.
