Electrical Cable Reels - Failure Analysis - Fatigue

Mechanical FEA

Location:

United States

Client:

Cable Manufacturer

General Contractor:

Mechanical FEA was used to examine take-up reels used in the manufacture of communications and electrical cable. Computer modeling of static and dynamic loads due to centrifugal loading about multiple axes was critical to understanding the stresses exerted on the reel during factory operation. Stress and deformation was used to evaluate member size, welded connections and susceptibility to long-term fatigue. Vibration modes were also examined to determine resonance potential.

Life-cycle performance of manufacturing equipment and fixtures subjected to cyclic or dynamic loading can prove to be valuable information to industry leaders.

Optimization of equipment to meet specific targets is now possible through advanced computer modeling backed up with an experienced engineer’s creativity and judgment.
